Optical Solutions FAQs

Compatibility should be verified against the specific switch, router, platform, software environment, and required optical specification rather than relying only on a part number. OSI Global tests its optical transceivers against real network hardware and provides compatibility verification before deployment. Its portfolio includes more than 10,975 MSA-compliant transceivers across major networking platforms.

OEM transceivers are branded and supplied by the network equipment manufacturer, while third-party transceivers are produced for compatibility with those platforms by independent suppliers. Properly engineered third-party optics can provide equivalent network functionality at a lower acquisition cost. The key is choosing a supplier that verifies compatibility, tests its optics against actual hardware, provides engineering support, and backs the products with a strong warranty.

Coherent optics such as 400ZR and ZR+ can provide high-capacity connectivity over longer distances while allowing organizations to simplify optical network architectures. Enterprises should consider reach, fiber characteristics, host-platform compatibility, power requirements, interoperability, and the underlying line system. OSI Global can help organizations evaluate coherent optical solutions based on their network architecture, distance, capacity, and growth requirements.

Open line systems separate the optical transport layer from a single equipment manufacturer, allowing organizations to use compatible transponders and coherent optics from different vendors. This can provide greater flexibility when expanding capacity or upgrading optical networks. OSI Global provides open optical networking solutions that can support high-capacity DWDM environments while giving customers more choice in how their networks are designed and expanded.

Start by auditing existing switches, fiber plant, transceivers, cabling, distances, and future bandwidth requirements. Determine which infrastructure can be reused and where new optics or optical transport equipment are required. For 400G and 800G migrations, organizations should also evaluate coherent optics, fiber capacity, reach, power requirements, interoperability, and whether an open line system or DWDM architecture can support future growth. A phased migration can also reduce disruption and avoid replacing infrastructure before it is necessary.

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) allows multiple wavelengths to carry data over the same fiber, increasing capacity without requiring new fiber for every additional connection. Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) add flexibility by allowing wavelengths to be remotely routed through the optical network. OSI Global can help organizations evaluate DWDM, ROADM, coherent optics, and open optical networking solutions as capacity and connectivity requirements grow.
